Ateneo HS’ Il Voce Takes Flight

Il Voce, the official co-curricular organisation under the Arts Subject Area of the Ateneo High School, lends their voices in their concert, Take Flight, at the St. Stanislaus Kostka Chapel. The concert is for the benefit of Tulong Dunong and the on-going projects for the victims of Typhoon Haiyan.

Il Voce opens the show with Sheppard’s energetic, “Geronimo” and my personal favourite, the Bee Gees’ “How Deep is Your Love.”

And then they sing John Legend’s “All of Me,” Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror” and another personal favourite, Ryan Cayabyab’s heartfelt, “Iniibig Kita.”

What I like about the first set is the movement from an upbeat to a heartfelt rendition of an Original Pilipino Music (OPM).

During the break, I am surprised to see Fr. Victor William Garcia, the parish priest of the Parish of the Holy Family in Kamias. I am so happy to see him here. When I was chaplain of UP Diliman in 2003-08, he was assigned there as deacon. I knew even then that he loved singing.

Fr. Victor William Garcia

Fr. William Garcia is the parish priest of the Parish of the Holy Family. He belongs to the Diocese of Cubao, and has, from the very beginning, loved singing.

Mr. Stef Aranas and Mr. Damon Dadap also took turns entertaining the audience.

Mr. Michael Odoemene conducts Il Voce in this photo. He has changed Il Voce completely. Taking the reins, he made Il Voce rise to fame. Patiently training the boys, he has led them to become champions of the prestigious choir contest, Musicapella. During his moderatorship with Mr. Aljohn Flores, the students’ voices have started to mature, enabling them to handle difficult pieces and preparing them for competitions.

Mr. Michael Odoemene, music teacher, conducts Il Voce. During his stint as moderator, he has transformed the group into a choir ready for competitions. They have become champions of Musicapella, a choir competition for high school.

Now in an all-black attire, Il Voce returns for the second set. They open with Dingdong Avanzado’s “Maghihintay Sa ‘Yo” with Magis awardee for 2015, Mr. Agastin Chan as the soloist.

Here is a video of “Maghihintay sa ‘Yo” uploaded to my Youtube channel.

And then, with candles in hand, they sing “Agony” from the musical, “Into the Woods.”
